The black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) is native to two areas of Africa, including South African and Lesotho. They have a dark saddle on the back, which runs from the nape of the neck to the base of the tail. Black-backed jackals are monogamous, and a breeding pair usually bonds for life. The pups from the previous year may stay on as helpers; creating an extended family unit. Our Camera trap has captured a glimpse of black-backed jackal sharing the Ts’ehlanyane National Park with Maliba!
