Fishing for wild Lesotho Trout

Fishing in Lesotho is one of the more popular activities and not without good reason. As it offers plenty of excitement for the angler and can be undertaken at numerous sites around the mountain Kingdom. The areas are remote, with difficult access and very few people, as a result fishing pressure is very light and you will have unlimited kilometres of rivers all for yourself.


The trout river fishing season opens each year on the 1st of September and closes on the 31st of May.  Water levels permitting, the best time to fly fish these waters is at the end of September to the end of November and then again from March to May. Trying to fish during the rainy season (December to February) is possibly the worst time to stalk the river banks, as most of the rivers are clouded with silt and the fishing is badly affected. In celebration of the arrival of spring and the promise of warmer weather, Fouriesburg (only 10km from the Caledonspoort Border Post into Lesotho) is hosting their annual spring fair on the first Saturday of September.

This year, local artists and crafters are creating signage from purely recycled materials, collected by the community. The event will begin with a free 5km fun walk, and is planned to culminate in an evening performance by two of South Africa’s top stand-up comedians: Mel Miller and Al Prodgers. Read more
